SANE Continuing Education​

​All nurses are required to complete continuing education courses during the licensure/renewal period, November 1 through October 31 each year.

201 KAR 20:411 Section 8, requires that of the 14 contact hours required annually, SANE credentialed nurses must complete 5 contact hours related to the role of the sexual assault nurse examiner or forensic nursing between November 1 – October 31 of each year.


SANE Continuing Education

Nurses with a SANE Credential CE Requirements

Nurses with a SANE Credential must complete at least 5 contact hours of nursing continuing education related to the role of the SANE or forensic nursing between November 1 - October 31 every year.

hese hours may be applied to the RN's annual 14 contact hour CE requirement.


Required Documentation

Completion certificate that includes the following:

  1. Nurse's name;
  2. Course title (related to SANE);
  3. Date of completion;
  4. Number of contact hours awarded;
  5. Provider information; and
  6. Whom the provider is approved by to offer nursing CE.

Providers must be approved by KBN, another state board of nursing, or a national nursing organization.

Reporting via CE Broker

  1. Select +Report CE;
  2. Select Begin next to SANE-related continuing education;
  3. Report each course individually;
  4. Enter the date the course was completed;
  5. Enter course information;
  6. Attach completion certificate;
  7. Select Submit.

CE Providers

KBN Approved CE Providers Offering SANE CE Courses

CE offerings as well as information to pursue national certification may be obtained through the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN)

If you want to become a KBN-approved CE provider, please contact the Continuing Competency Coordinator at kbn.cecoordinator@ky.gov for a link to complete the initial application online. Within the email request for an initial application, include the following information: the name of the potential CE providership; name of the CE nurse administrator; their email and phone contact information; provider type; and the current CV of the potential CE nurse administrator which includes information on their BSN or higher degree and experience in adult education.  201 KAR 20:220
