Continuing Education

All nurses are required to complete Continuing Education Requirements every year between November 1 – October 31. An APRN’s certification meets the annual CE requirements for their RN license.

APRNs may review the chart below regarding Annual CE requirements for their APRN license, the documentation required, that must be maintained for five years as proof of compliance, and how to report via CE Broker Kentucky Licensees: Free Basic Account | CE Broker. Reporting via CE Broker is only mandatory if you are selected for the CE Audit.

Option 1

All APRN CE Requirements​

All APRNs must complete at least 5 contact hours in pharmacology** between November 1 - October 31 every year.

Completed through a CE Provider approved to offer nursing CE by the KBN; another state board of nursing; or one of the national nursing organizations. (see 201 KAR 20:220)

Note: An APRN's certification meets the 14 contact hour requirement for their RN license.


Required Documentation

Completion Certificate that includes the following:​

  1. Nurse's name;
  2. Course title;
  3. Date of completion;
  4. Contact hours awarded;
  5. Provider information; and
  6. Whom the provider is approved by to offer nursing CE. (KBN, another state board of nursing, or one of the national nursing organizations listed in 201 KAR 20:220.)

Reporting via CE Broker

  1. Select your APRN license number*;​
  2. Select +Report CE;
  3. Select Begin next to Continuing Education Related to Pharmacology;
  4. Report each course individually
  5. Enter the date the course was completed;
  6. Enter course information​;
  7. Attach the completion certificate; and
  8. Select Submit.

Option 2

APRNs registered with the DEA & have a Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) (KASPER) Account​

All APRNs registered with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and have a Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) account/ Kentucky All Scheduled Prescription Electronic Reporting (KASPER) must complete at least 3 of the required 5 contact hours of pharmacology** in pain management or addiction disorders between November 1 - October 31 of each year.

Completed through a CE Provider approved to offer nursing CE by the KBN; another state board of nursing; or one of the national nursing organizations. (see 201 KAR 20:220)


Required Documentation

KBN Nursing CE Employment Evaluation Form completed by supervisor covering at least 6 months of the ear​ning period; and

Contact Hours

Completion Certificate that includes the following​:

  1. Nurse's name;
  2. Course title;
  3. Date of completion;
  4. Contact hours awarded;
  5. Provider information; and
  6. Whom the provider is approved by to offer nursing CE. (KBN, another state board of nursing, or one of the national nursing organizations listed in 201 KAR 20:220.)

Reporting via CE Broker

  1. Select your APRN license number*;​
  2. Select +Report CE;
  3. Select Begin next to Continuing Education Related to Pharmacology;
  4. Report each course individually
  5. Enter the date the course was completed;
  6. Enter course information​;
  7. Attach the completion certificate; and
  8. Select Submit.

* CE related to Pharmacology must be entered under the licensee's APRN number and designated as such. Reporting Pharmacology Hours in CE Broker - When reporting CE related to Pharmacology in CE Broker enter the certificates under the licensee's APRN license number and enter only the number of hours designated as pharmacology on the completion certificate.

** Pharmacology CE Requirements - To qualify as pharmacology, content shall include drug-specific information, safe prescribing practices, safe medication administration, prescribing methodologies, new regulations, or similar topics. Objectives for the contact hours related to pharmacology shall be identified. Casual mention of medications or medical treatments shall not qualify. CE Certificates should reflect specific pharmacology contact hours awarded.

In addition to the standard methods of CE approval, APRNs are allowed to use continuing medical education (CME) credits for pharmacology (provided the credits are pharmacology-related), if the provider offering the course is recognized by their national certifying organization (e.g. AANP, ANCC, etc...)
