Renewal Frequently Asked Questions

The KBN Nurse Portal works best on a Windows desktop PC or laptop in Chrome or ​​Microsoft Edge. Mobile devices are not supported (for example: phones, iPads, tablets)​


  • You will follow these steps to submit your 2024 renewal:​
    • ​Log into your Nurse Portal​ account.
      • Under ‘Your Licenses with Kentucky’ there will be a link ‘Apply for Renewal’ located next to your license/credential.​
        • The link will not appear until September 15, 2024 and will be available until October 31, 2024.​
          • ​Once you select the link it will open the 2024​ renewal application.​
      • NOTE: If you have forgot your password to your nurse portal account, you may reset the password by:
        • Selecting ‘Forgot your password?’ on the Nurse Portal​ log in screen.
          • ​Enter your email address.
            • ​Select ‘Submit’.
              • ​A link will be emailed to you to reset your password.​​​
  • If you have a name change, you will follow these steps:​
    • ​Log into your Nurse Portal​ account.
      • Go to the bottom of Nurse Portal Dashboard to Other Applications.​
        • Select the application ‘ALL LICENSE TYPES (EXCEPT SRNA) – Request Name Change’.​
          • ​Follow instructions.​
          • ​Upload required legal name change document.​
          • Submit fee of $25 (the fee is still required during the renewal period). ​​
  • The LPN, RN, and APRN/RN Combined Renewal will present the declaration of primary state of residence (PSOR) statements. Your PSOR declaration and address will appear on the application. If this has changed since last renewal, you can update your address and PSOR on the application.​
    • If you previously declared any state other than Kentucky, and you have now moved and declared Kentucky as your PSOR, you will be required to upload proof of Kentucky PSOR.​​
      • You will be required to upload one of the following current documents:​
        • ​Valid Driver’s License​
        • ​State‐issued ID Card​
        • REAL ID​
        • Voter Registration​
        • Vehicle Registration​​​
    • If you declared Kentucky previously and have submitted the proof of residence document, and your PSOR has not changed, you do not need to re-upload the copy during the renewal application.
  • You will receive a confirmation message in your nurse portal once your renewal has been processed. You may validate the license/credential within the KBN Nurse Portal, as well as through the License Verification Portal.
  • If your license/credential has not been renewed before midnight, October 31 (EDT), your license/credential will lapse. Working on a lapsed license/credential is prohibited by Kentucky Nursing Law.​​​
  • If you answered “yes” to the discipline, criminal, and/or the APRN national certification revocation questions, your license/credential will not be renewed until KBN receives and reviews the required documents. ​
    • The documents will be required to upload during renewal.

  • Licensees are required to maintain a current mailing and email address with KBN per KRS 314.107.
  • ​​​Continuing education contact hours must be earned during the period of November 1, 2023 – October 31, 2024. However, you do not have to complete the contact hours before submitting the renewal and paying the renewal fee for your license. They must be completed prior to midnight, October 31, 2024 (EDT).
