KBN Free CE

​​​​​​​​​The KBN is currently offering the following CE Courses for free. While KBN offers free courses, nurses can take CE courses from any provider approved to offer nursing CE by the KBN, another state board of nursing, or one of the national nursing organizations listed in 201 KAR 20:220.  

All KBN CE Courses are free, provided in an online format, and open to all nurses. Each course provides a contact hour of CE for each nurse who reviews the entire video, passes the exam with an 80% or higher, and completes the evaluation.

An Overview of Kentucky Laws and Advisory Opinion Statements

This course provides an overview of the nursing laws and Advisory Opinion Statements of the KBN. It is one of four modules of the Nurse Leadership Program.

Objectives: Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify how to locate resources and information on the KBN website
  • Identify the relationship between Kentucky Nursing Laws and Advisory Opinions regarding a nurse’s responsibility and accountability for their nursing practice.

Nurse Leadership Program Module II
KBN Substance Use Disorder (SUD) & Compliance Monitoring: Alternative to Compliance Monitoring

KBN Investigation & Disciplinary Process

This course provides information on violations of nursing laws and reporting requirements. It is three of four modules of the Nurse Leadership Program.

Objectives: Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Gain an understanding of the type of violations of nursing laws and the requirements for mandatory reporting
  • Understand the importance of accurate documentation
  • Understand the importance of keeping contact information updated in the Kentucky Board of Nursing Nurse Portal
  • ​Gain an understanding of the definition of criminal convictions, and the reporting requirements for criminal convictions to the Kentucky Board of Nursing.

Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Forms of Dementia:
Tools for Early Identification, Assessment, and Treatment

This course meets the one-time content-specific CE requirement for Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia as listed in KRS 314.073 and 201 KAR 20:215.

  • Identify warning signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia
  • ​Understand the importance of early detection and diagnosis of memory loss

An Overview of Medicinal Cannabis Basics and Implications for the Kentucky APRN Authorized Practitioner

Presenter:  Sarah Cecil, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, PMHNP-BC, MSCN, KBN Professional Consultant

Although this course is open to all nurses, it is primarily designed for APRNs who have been authorized to provide written certification for the use of medicinal cannabis or are interested in applying for the authorization. 

Please note: This course covers the following topics only: 

  • ​Diagnosing qualifying medical conditions; 
  • Treating qualifying medical conditions with medicinal cannabis; and 
  • The pharmacological characteristics of medicinal cannabis and possible drug interactions. 

APRNs should review additional information on all APRN CE requirements to ensure they have meet all requirements.
Objectives: Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the history of cannabinoid medicine
  • Identify the key components of medical history, physical exam, and diagnostic findings in the six qualifying conditions (QD) for medicinal marijuana use in Kentucky
  • Utilize safety considerations in recommending cannabinoid-based medications, including side effects, drug interactions, and contraindications
  • Interpret Kentucky laws for medicinal cannabis and their implications for practice.
