Overview

Nursing Student

A nursing student is an individual enrolled in a Board of Nursing approved nursing program, who is working toward becoming a licensed practical nurse (LPN), registered nurse (RN), or advanced practice registered nurse (APRN). A nursing student is in the process of developing the foundation in the principles of nursing care, including anatomy, pharmacology, pathophysiology, and health assessment.

While in a nursing program a nursing student is prepared to utilize critical thinking skills essential for safe clinical judgment and evidence-based decision-making. Nursing programs are charged with training students to prioritize patient safety, ethical and legal standard adherence, and to deliver culturally competent care.

Upon completion of a nursing program, students should be prepared to enter the workforce at the level of a novice nurse that can provide safe and effective care in a variety of healthcare settings.
