Prevention of Transmission of HIV and HBV by Nurses

In 1993, in response to federal legislation requiring each state to institute measures to prevent the transmission of HIV and HBV by nurses performing exposure-prone invasive procedures, KBN promulgated an administrative regulation, 201 KAR 20:235, on this matter.  The regulation requires that all nurses adhere to universal precautions in their respective practice, and that nurses who fail to do so shall be subject to disciplinary action on their license to practice nursing.  In addition, the regulation establishes a mechanism for nurses who perform exposure-prone invasive procedures and know their status to be HIV or HBV seropositive, to seek counsel from KBN regarding their continued performance of exposure-prone invasive procedures.‚Äč
