Types of CE Courses

Information is provided here about the types of courses available for earning continuing education.

If you have additional CE questions, send a message using the CE Contact Form.

Providers of CE

Licensees, regardless of state of residence, may earn all (or any combination of) contact hours from online offerings. However, continuing education courses must be offered by approved or accepted CE providers. Please see the list of National Nursing Organizations Recognized by KBN for Approval of CE Offerings. If the provider of a CE course is approved by one of these national nursing organizations or any state board of nursing, KBN will accept that course for the same number of contact hours. A list of KBN-approved providers can be found by clicking the link below.

CE Credit for College Courses

Certain college credit courses may be used to meet CE requirements.  Nursing courses, designated by a nursing course number, and academic courses that are applicable to the nurse's role will count toward CE hours. One semester credit hour equals 15 contact hours; one quarter credit hour equals 12 contact hours.

If a college course does not fall within these designated categories, and a nurse feels the course is applicable to his/her nursing practice, an Application for Individual Request for Review of CE Activities [PDF Format - 71k] may be submitted to KBN for review of the course. There is a $10 non-refundable fee for this service.

Prelicensure general education courses, either electives or designated to meet degree requirements, are not acceptable.
