CE/Continuing Competency Audit

Have you recently received a letter from the Board informing you that your nursing license renewal for 2017 has been selected for the CE/continuing competency audit?  Are you confused on what you should submit to the Board to comply with the request?  If so, you’ve found a valuable resource to help successfully navigate you through the CE/continuing competency audit process.

First, a few important pieces of information to keep in mind:

  • All CE/continuing competency documentation is due to the KBN office via US mail by February 28, 2019.
  • Only submit proof of documentation that will support CE/continuing competency that is dated between the dates of November 1, 2017 through October 31, 2018.  Anything submitted with a completion date that falls outside this date range will not be accepted for this audit.
  • Please be sure to keep copies of all documents submitted to the Board.  Information submitted will not be returned to you.
  • You can expect correspondence from the Board office within 90 days from the date your audit response is received indicating if you have met the competency requirement or if additional information is required.

CE/Continuing Competency Audit Options

On page two or the back page of your letter, you will find several OPTIONS to choose in order to demonstrate your CE/continuing competency.  PLEASE ONLY CHOOSE ONE OPTION.  Mark the option you choose in the box provided and be sure to submit all valid, corresponding documentation.

APRNS:  Please use the option at the bottom of the page labeled "APRNs".

SANE Credentialed Nurses:  Please use the option at the bottom of the page labeled "SANEs".

All Other Licensees:

If you choose to use Option 1:  14 Approved Contact Hours:  You must submit copies of VALID CE certificates totaling 14 or more contact hours.  All nursing continuing education credit earned must be earned in CONTACT HOURS.  CEUs, clock hours, and AMA credits will not be accepted.  Also, please send in copies of actual CE certificates, do not send in transcripts. Finally, please note:  ACLS or PALS cards will not be accepted as proof of nursing CE.  You must submit the actual certificate of completion showing the number of contact hours earned for successfully completing an ACLS or PALS course from an approved provider of nursing CE.

If you choose to use Option 2:  Satisfactory Performance Review & 7 Approved Contact Hours:  You must submit a copy of the entire successful performance evaluation that covers a six month period of time falling within the dates of November 1, 2017 through October 31, 2018.  The evaluation must be signed and dated by your supervisor.  You must also submit a fully completed Nursing Employment Evaluation Form (provided to you as page 3 of the CE/continuing competency audit letter).  Finally, be sure to also submit copies of valid CE certificates from approved nursing CE providers totaling 7 contact hours earned between the dates of November 1, 2017 through October 31, 2018.

If you choose to use Option 3:  National Certification or Recertification:  Please only submit a copy of your certification card or a copy of the actual certificate issued by the certifying body showing the date of expiration of the certification.

If you choose to use Option 4:  Post Licensure College Courses:  Classes must be post-licensure nursing or physical or social science courses.  You must submit a copy of your transcript.  It DOES NOT need to be an official transcript.  Your name and the name of the college/university should be printed on the transcript.

If you choose to use Option 5:  Participation as a Preceptor:  The preceptorship can be 120 hours completed with one nursing student or employee or a total of 120 hours completed with more than one nursing student or employee as long as the preceptorships were done as a one-to-one relationship.  All preceptor hours must be earned within the dates of November 1, 2017 through October 31, 2017 to be eligible.  Preceptorships can be documentated by using the Preceptor Verification Form (see link below) or by written documentation from the educational institution or by the preceptor's supervisor.
