RN and LPN Reinstatement

Apply for reinstatement if you have previously held a Kentucky LPN or RN license that has lapsed.

If you failed to renew your license during the renewal period (annually between September 15 and October 31), you must meet all of the reinstatement requirements.

There is no grace period for renewal of a Kentucky nursing license.

The process is the same for LPNs and RNs.

Complete the application and submit the fee.

  • Complete online application
    • Applications are valid for one year. If requirements are not met within one year, your application will expire and you will have to start the process over again.
  • Pay application fee of $135 (ALL FEES ARE NON-REFUNDABLE)
  • You are encouraged to complete the online application; however, if you would like to request a paper application visit the KBN Document Library and use the keywords ((paper application request – LPN and RN reinstatement)) to obtain the request form. There is a $40 fee for the paper application in addition to the reinstatement application fee of $135.

    Meet the Continuing Competency Requirements

    You must meet the required continuing competency requirements which are determined by how long your license has been lapsed

    Pass the Jurisprudence Exam with a score of 80% or higher if your Kentucky RN or LPN has been lapsed for one year or more

    Complete the Jurisprudence Examination after completing the reinstatement application.

If you are an APRN that plans to apply for reinstatement of a Kentucky license, please select the following applicable option:

Licenses may be issued within 14 business days after all documents have been received and reviewed. However, if you respond "Yes" to the disciplinary or conviction questions it can take up to three months to process your application.
