RN and APRN Reinstatement

Apply for reinstatement if you have previously held Kentucky RN & APRN licenses that have lapsed.

If you failed to renew your licenses during the renewal period (annually between September 15 and October 31), you must meet all of the reinstatement requirements.

There is no grace period for renewal of a Kentucky nursing license.

If you are reinstating a Kentucky APRN license only, select APRN only reinstatement to be routed to the correct page.

This page provides information on reinstating both Kentucky RN and Kentucky APRN licenses.

  • Complete online application
    • Applications are valid for one year. If requirements are not met within one year, your application will expire and you will have to start the process over again.
  • Pay application fee of $270 (ALL FEES ARE NON-REFUNDABLE)
  • You are encouraged to complete the online application; however, if you would like to request a paper application visit the KBN Document Library and use the keywords paper application request – RN & APRN reinstatement to obtain the request form. There is a $40 fee for the paper application in addition to the reinstatement application fee of $270.

Provide proof of current national certification

Meet the Continuing Competency Requirements

You must meet the required continuing competency requirements which are determined by how long your licenses have been lapsed

Pass the Jurisprudence Exam with a score of 80% or higher if your Kentucky RN has been lapsed for one year or more

Complete the Jurisprudence Examination after completing the reinstatement application.​

Reporting Criminal Convictions

If​ you have any criminal convictions, they will need to be reported on your application. The exception to this is traffic misdemeanors, other than DUIs. For information about what qualifies as a criminal conviction please review the ​Mandatory Reporting of Criminal Convictions​.​​​

Licenses may be issued within 14 business days after all documents have been received and reviewed. However, if you respond "Yes" to the disciplinary or conviction questions it can take up to three months to process your application.
