NCLEX Eligibility Changes

KBN has considered the concerns expressed by several stakeholders in the sequence required of completing the clinical internship prior to taking NCLEX.  Presently, KBN's administrative regulation 201 KAR 20:070 requires an applicant to first complete the clinical internship before taking the NCLEX.  This has caused some difficulties for some applicants and some employers.  At its April meeting, the Board voted to change the sequence.  When effective, the administrative regulation will allow an applicant to take NCLEX prior to completing the clinical internship, if they so choose.  Both passing the NCLEX and completion of the clinical internship are required by law in order to be licensed as a nurse in Kentucky.  KBN is seeking to file the changes to the regulation as an Emergency Administrative Regulation, which will go into effect when filed with the Legislative Research Commission.  Information on when this will go into effect will be provided here.

Regulation Effective Immediately

Administrative regulation 201 KAR 20:070 has been filed with the Legislative Research Commission.  Effective immediately, all applicants for licensure may be made eligible to sit for NCLEX and be issued a provisional license.  This allows an applicant to take NCLEX prior to completing the clinical internship, if they so choose.  Passing NCLEX and completion of the clinical internship are required by law in order to be licensed as a nurse in Kentucky.  This regulation change will affect all applicants for licensure by examination.

Status Verification

Within 48 hours of the date the regulation becomes effective, KBN will make individuals whose application is on file eligible to test, if the applicant has registered with Pearson/Vue.  You should frequently monitor the email address you gave Pearson/Vue for your Authorization To Test (ATT).  You can check to see when you have been made eligible to test by clicking on the Application Status link.  You will not receive your permanent license until you send KBN the Verification of Completion of the Clinical Internship form.
