Required Title for Advanced Practice Registered Nurses:
KRS 314.042 (5): “Any person who holds a registration and designation to practice as an advanced registered nurse practitioner in this state shall have the right to use the title “advanced registered nurse practitioner” and the abbreviation “ARNP”.
In Kentucky, you must use the title “ARNP” after your signature. If you choose to do so, you may follow the title “ARNP” with your designation and specialty.
KBN recognizes the following advanced practice designations:
- Nurse Anesthetist
- Nurse Practitioner
- Nurse Midwife
- Clinical Nurse Specialist
You must hold an active Kentucky RN or multi-state RN license before an ARNP registration will be issued.
To practice as an ARNP in Kentucky, you must maintain:
- RN licensure and
- Current national certification*
If your RN licensure or your national certification should lapse, you may be subject to disciplinary action.
If you are endorsing your ARNP credential only, a fingerprint card is not required.

TO ALL ARNP'S WHO ARE NATIONALLY CERTIFIED THROUGH THE AMERICAN NURSES CREDENTIALING CENTER (ANCC):
Effective January 1, 2008, ANCC will no longer provide wallet sized certification cards. Verification letters will be sent by ANCC to all advanced practice nurses. The verification letter will contain the full certification specialty, certification number, and certification expiration date. You will be required to submit a copy of the verification letter to KBN to receive initial ARNP registration and to update recertification dates. Current national certification must be maintained to practice as an ARNP in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

- Official transcript of post-basic education
- Proof of current national certification
- Copy of current RN license
- Verification of original licensure
- Proof of earning 2 hours of HIV/AIDS continuing education
