Renewal of Status

The state registered nurse aide active status is good for two years and must be renewed.  The date you passed your nurse aide training examination is the date used for renewal of your active status.

How Do I Maintain or Update an Active Status?

Proof of a minimum of 8 hours of employment as a state registered nurse aide performing nursing or nursing related functions for compensation in each 24 month period is required.  Proof of employment can be one of the following:

  • Paycheck Stub
  • W-2 form OR
  • Letter from a healthcare facility on official letterhead

State registered nurse aides performing private duty nursing must obtain a letter from the person they are caring for or a family member of that individual. The letter must list all of the following:

  • Duties Performed
  • Time Period Employed
  • Proof of Payment for Services

Can't Provide Proof of Employment?

A state registered nurse aide cannot renew or update registry status if he/she does not have an active status on the registry.  You must contact KCTCS to test.  Individuals who fail any part of the competency evaluation are required by state and federal law to retake an approved training program.

Note:  Effective December 1, 2006 nurse aides will no longer be able to retest for failure to show proof of employment.  You will have to retake the program and test over.

For a complete list of approved training providers, contact Vicki Barber, Cabinet for Health and Family Services, at 502-564-5707.
